Headword: Κευθωνύμου κλέος, αἶσχος
Adler number: kappa,1439
Translated headword: Keuthonymos' fame, or shame
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[A proverb] applied to those who have a shameful fame; or if someone were to conceal his name;[1] or [the name of someone] ill-named.
Greek Original:
Κευθωνύμου κλέος, ἢ αἶσχος: ἐπὶ τῶν αἴσχιον κλέος ἐχόντων: ἢ ἄν τις ἐπικρύψειε τὸ ὄνομα: ἢ δυσωνύμου.
Notes:
Slightly more fully in Zenobius 4.72. The only attested Keuthonymos (Kythonymos in Zen.) is the father of the herdsman Menoites in the myth of Heracles' Labours, but nothing is known of E. himself -- hence the struggle, here, to interpret the proverb.
[1] This attempt at explanation is etymological; cf. kappa 1438.
Keywords: daily life; dialects, grammar, and etymology; mythology; proverbs
