Synagoge kappa42,
Photius kappa82; cf.
Hesychius kappa301. The headword (from
κακίζω :
kappa 153, and cf.
kappa 154) and gloss are both masculine nominative plural present middle or passive participles. This participle can have a middle sense, 'being humble' or 'being cowardly' (e.g. in
Homer Iliad 24.214; Web address 1); but among likely sources for the lexicographers this particular form occurs only in
Thucydides 1.105.6 (Web address 2) and 5.75.3 (Web address 3) where the usage is passive (this connection was also proposed by Naber and Theodoridis on
Photius). Cf. also
Procopius,
De bellis 5.12.31, 5.20.19.
