Headword: Κλάδεσι
Adler number: kappa,1699
Translated headword: on branches
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[third declension]: on branches [second declension]. From the nominative klados, like [the neuter] tekos ["offspring"]. [1] Aristophanes in Birds [writes]: "that have their pasture on branches of ivy."[2] Also [sc. attested is] kladi in the [singular] dative.[3]
Greek Original:
Κλάδεσι: κλάδοις. ἀπ' εὐθείας τῆς κλάδος, ὡς τέκος. Ἀριστοφάνης Ὄρνισιν: ἐπὶ κισσοῦ κλάδεσι νομὸν ἔχει. καὶ Κλαδὶ δοτική.
Notes:
[1] Comment from the scholia to Aristophanes, Birds 238 (see next note). The gloss explains that the second declension noun κλάδος, κλάδου, ὁ has metaplastic datives in the third declension, as if from the neuter κλάδος, κλάδους, τό , declined like τέκος, τέκους, τό .
[2] Aristophanes, Birds 238-239: "and those of you [birds] in gardens that have their pasture on branches of ivy": a lyric passage, see web address 1.
[3] This dative leads back to a nominative *κλάς, κλαδός , instead; its major attestation is in the song "I shall carry my sword in a branch of myrtle", on which see epsilon 1384, phi 592. The latter also comments on the grammar of the form.
