Translation: Thus did they call Gaius, the emperor of the Romans, since from early boyhood he grew up spending a lot of time in the military camps and would wear soldier’s shoes. From the “
caligae”,[1] therefore, they named him Caligula.[2]

Greek Original:Καλλιγόλας: οὕτως ἐκαλεῖτο Γάϊος, ὁ βασιλεὺς Ῥωμαίων, ἐπειδὴ ἐκ μικρᾶς ἡλικίας τὰ πολλὰ ἐν τῷ στρατοπέδῳ ἐτρέφετο καὶ τοῖς στρατιωτικοῖς ἐχρῆτο ὑποδήμασιν. ἐκ τῶν καλλίγων οὖν Καλλιγούλαν αὐτὸν ὠνόμασαν. ἢ Καλλιγόλας ὁ Γάϊος, διὰ τὸ ἐν στρατοπέδῳ γεννηθῆναι: ὥς φησιν Αἰλιανὸς ἐν τῷ Περὶ θείων ἐναργειῶν.

Aelian (2nd to 3rd century) fr.24 Hercher.
Athenaeus (2nd to 3rd century) seems to have employed
Aelian here since he uses the same wording and word order (
διὰ τὸ ἐν στρατοπέδῳ γεννηθῆναι ) when discussing Caligula’s birth in the camps (Deipnosophists 4.148D).
Eustathius (12th century) appears to adopt the story from
Athenaeus in his commentary on
Homer,
Iliad (2.810). For Latin sources which
