Translation: The flower. [sc. So-called] from discrimination.[1] For this reason also the [process] of discrimination is called a lily which withers easily and falls quickly. For this reason also the colocynth is called a lily, and they also call paupers lilies.[2] This κολόκυνθα is a Median [= Persian] word.
Greek Original:Κρίνον: τὸ ἄνθος. ἀπὸ τῆς διακρίσεως. διὸ καὶ τὰ τῆς διακρίσεως λέγεται κρίνον εὐμάραντον καὶ ταχὺ διαπίπτον. διὸ καὶ ἡ κολόκυνθα κρίνον λέγεται, καὶ τοὺς πτωχοὺς δὲ κρίνα λέγουσιν. αὐτὴ δὲ ἡ κολόκυνθα Μηδικόν ἐστιν ὄνομα.
