Translation: Meaning piously and humanely in
Thucydides. "To perform this well/cleverly is a credit to them." That is, being a pirate. For neither used they used to drive away a ploughing-ox or steal [it] by night, nor to practice piracy together with murders.
Καλῶς: ἀντὶ τοῦ εὐσεβῶς καὶ φιλανθρώπως παρὰ Θουκυδίδῃ. οἷς κόσμος καλῶς τοῦτο δρᾶν. τουτέστι τὸ λῃστεύειν. οὔτε γὰρ βοῦν ἀροτῆρα ἐλεηλάτουν ἢ ἔκλεπτον νυκτὸς οὔτε μετὰ φόνων ἐποίουν τὴν λῃστείαν.

kappa 262) occurs. The sense of the explanation seems to be that humane piracy is a credit because it is done openly and without loss of life.
