Aristophanes: 'they[1] used to write on the walls: Athenians[2] [are] beautiful'. It was a peculiarity of lovers to write the names of their beloveds on walls or trees or leaves of trees, thus: So-and-so [is] beautiful.

Καλοί: Ἀριστοφάνης: ἐν τοῖσι τοίχοις ἔγραφον: Ἀθηναίοις καλός. ἴδιον ἐραστῶν ἦν τὸ τὰ τῶν ἐρωμένων ὀνόματα γράφειν ἐν τοῖς τοίχοις ἢ δένδροις ἢ φύλλοις δένδρων, οὕτως: ὁ δεῖνα καλός.
