The city was long sunken. Franck Goddio identified its exact location in the Aboukir region in 1999, since when it has been the subject of some spectacular underwater archaeology.
Besides the Nile city (and associated toponyms, including the Canopic mouth of the Nile) in Egypt, a Kanopos in Libya and another near Byzantium are also attested.
