Amongst Romans a bronze plate, a span square,[1] which they used to place in front of their breasts. But others,[2] instead of this, used to put coats of chain-mail round their chests.

Καρδιοφύλαξ: παρὰ Ῥωμαίοις χάλκωμα σπιθαμιαῖον πάντη πάντως, ὃ προσετίθεντο πρὸ τῶν στέρνων. οἱ δὲ ἀντὶ τούτου ἁλυσιδωτοὺς χιτῶνας περιετίθεντο περὶ τοὺς θώρακας.

A paraphrase of Polybius 6.23.14-15.
[1] Approx. 9 by 9 inches.
[2] Polybius specifies "those rated above ten thousand drachmas", i.e. members of the first (Servian) property class. The heart-protector (in Latin, pectorale) has already been characterized as worn by common soldiers; the lorica is for the rich.
