A city. Also Kabeiroi, name of a people. [The word] also means demons.
The Kabeiroi or Cabiri were divinities at certain Greek mystery sanctuaries, esp.
Thebes (Boiotia),
Lemnos and Samothrace; the name is of Semitic origin (from kabir, "lord").
Though hard to disentangle, the present entry appears to recognize, over and above the existence of Kabeiroi in the sense already mentioned, the use of the term in a more purely geographical sense. Besides (e.g.) the "Kabeireion" in Boiotia and on
Lemnos we know of a "Kabeira" in
Pontos.
See Web Adresses 1 & 2 below for information on the Kabeireion in Boiotia.
