Headword: Καθεῖναι
Adler number: kappa,64
Translated headword: to let grow
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
To let loose downwards.
"They say that Antisthenes was the first to let his beard grow and to use a pouch and staff".[1]
Note:
[1] A clumsy summary of Diogenes Laertius 6.13; the claim about beard-growing actually concerns not Antisthenes (alpha 2723) but another philosopher, Diodoros of Aspendos. For the idiom πώγωνα καθεῖναι see already Aristophanes, Ecclesiazusae 99-100, and generally LSJ s.v. καθίημι .
