Aelian [writes]: "[sc. she was] a woman from
Syria and wagon-crushed by every comer. For she was a well-known courtesan and more passionate in licentiousness than those in the mimes, and with her postures appearing to the general view enticing the audience to the passions of the body, and extending the people, and whatever [was] with the people,[2] towards a swinish and manic wantonness."[3]
Notes:
[1] Perfect middle-passive participle of
καθαμαξεύω , masculine nominative singular. Grammarians discuss whether this verb should have a theta or a tau, i.e. whether the word for wagon should be
ἅμαξα or
ἄμαξα .
[2] This presumably means the non-citizen population of the (unnamed) city in question.
