The subject of the verb there is Pericles' opponent, the by-now elderly Thucydides Melesiou (OCD(3) s.v. Thucydides(1)), probably the grandfather of the historian theta 414; he appears in other wrestling metaphors elsewhere, e.g. Plutarch, Pericles 8.
