Headword: Κατεριθευομένου
Adler number: kappa,979
Translated headword: overcoming by intrigue
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
"On the contrary, with the king [or: emperor] overcoming by intrigue and holding back from the territory and attending to administration of justice with accuracy and care, they failed to notice that they had been destroyed by his intentions,[1] having neglected their own safety."[2]
Greek Original:
Κατεριθευομένου: τὸ δ' ἐναντίον κατεριθευομένου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τῆς χώρας ἀπεχομένου καὶ κατὰ τὴν δικαιοδοσίαν ἐξακριβοῦντος ἐπιμελῶς, ἔλαθον ἐκλυθέντες ταῖς διανοίαις, κατολιγωρήσαντες τῆς ἑαυτῶν ἀσφαλείας.
Notes:
The headword, evidently extracted from the quotation given, is present participle, masculine genitive singular, of the otherwise unattested verb κατεριθεύομαι .
LSJ s.v. translate it, as here, 'overcome [sc. someone] by intrigue', i.e. middle rather than passive; cf. ἐριθεύομαι (epsilon 2985), ἐξεριθεύομαι (epsilon 1647).
[1] Bernhardy added καὶ "and" at this point.
[2] [Polybius] fr.173, i.e. authorship (and personnel) unknown.
