Headword: Λαγῴοις
Adler number: lambda,31
Translated headword: on hare
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
On hare’s flesh. Aristophanes: “[with the revenue] from which twenty thousand of the common people [could live] on hare and all sorts of garlands.”
Notes:
An approximation of Aristophanes, Wasps 709-10 (web address 1), with comment from the scholia there; cf. pi 3221. Bdelycleon (for whom see under lambda 14) charges the demagogues with diverting the revenue from the tribute brought by the member states of the Delian League, that is, the Athenian Empire (for which see generally under mu 739). (He has asserted that the League had a thousand tributary cities, whereas at its largest there were about 250. See the second link below.) He would have each of the cities assessed for the support of twenty Athenian citizens.
The scholia say that eating hare’s flesh means living luxuriously; and this headword itself can by extension cover all sorts of dainties or luxury foodstuffs (see LSJ s.v.).
