[He who has been] pirated/robbed.[1] Also [sc. attested is] lêistikon ["piratical"], a brigade and a mob; but lêistrikon [is] a possession.[2]
[1] Aorist passive participle (masculine nominative singular) from the same verb as
lambda 424. Same gloss given in
Photius. The earliest known instance of an aorist passive participle is Apollonius Rhodius,
Argonautica 4.400 (
ληισθεῖσαν ).
[2] This distinction, made by Aelius
Dionysius,
Ἀττικὰ ὀνόματα s.v.
λῃστικόν , attempts to give an active sense to
λῃστικόν "plundering" (e.g. "of pirates") vs.
λῃστρικόν "plundered". This is clearly not reflected in how
λῃστρικός has actually been used (LSJ s.v.) The instance being glossed is
Thucydides 1.4; see the
scholia there. Aelius
Dionysius is cited more closely in
Photius; the distinction is also invoked in
lambda 474.
