Adler number: lambda,54
Translated headword: Laodikeians, Laodiceans
Vetting Status: low

In the Epigrams:[1] "avoid the asp, the toad, the serpent, and Laodikeans."
Greek Original:
Λακιδέας: ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασι: ἀσπίδα, φρῦνον, ὄφιν καὶ Λακιδέας περίφευγε.
Notes:
[1] Actually quoted at the beginning of Synesius' Letter 127 (to his brother). The present headword, extracted from it, is accusative plural. Here it has been transmitted as La(o)kideans, but see more fully at lambda 854, phi 768, and the Synesius passage itself (which goes on to mention 'Euthalios the Laodikean').
The Barrington Atlas lists seven Near- or Middle-eastern cities called Laodikeia/Laodicea; for two of them see also OCD(3) s.v. Laodicea.
Keywords: dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography; poetry; zoology
