Translation: This man [was] an archon in
Athens long ago. He held office in the era of Dareios,[1] at a time when there was a heavy fall of snow and everything froze up, preventing anyone from travelling. Hence they used to call all cold things "Lakratideses".
Aristophanes [writes]: "the leg[s] of the aged Lakratides are heavy".[2] That is, because of old age I cannot walk fast.
Greek Original:Λακρατίδης: οὗτος ἀρχαῖος ἄρχων Ἀθήνησιν. ἦρχε δὲ ἐπὶ τῶν χρόνων Δαρείου, ἐφ' οὗ πλείστη χιὼν ἐγένετο καὶ ἀπέπηξε πάντα, ὡς μὴ δύνασθαί τινα προϊέναι. διόπερ τὰ ψυχρὰ πάντα Λακρατίδας ἐκάλουν. Ἀριστοφάνης: παλαιῷ Λακρατίδῃ τὸ σκέλος βαρύνεται. ὅ ἐστι διὰ τὸ γῆρας οὐχ οἷός τέ εἰμι θᾶττον βαδίζειν.
