Fable [ainos] differs from myth[1] in that the fable is created not for children but for [adult] men, and not for entertainment alone but also to provide some advice; for its purpose is, by dissimulating, to give some advice and instructions - just as Hesiod obviously did.[2]

Μῦθος: λόγος ψευδής, εἰκονίζων τὴν ἀλήθειαν. διαφέρει δὲ αἶνος μύθου τῷ τὸν αἶνον μὴ πρὸς παῖδας, ἀλλὰ πρὸς ἄνδρας πεποιῆσθαι, καὶ μὴ πρὸς ψυχαγωγίαν μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ παραίνεσιν ἔχειν τινά: βούλεται γὰρ ἐπικρυπτόμενος παραινεῖν τι καὶ διδάσκειν: ὅπερ Ἡσίοδος φαίνεται πεποιηκώς.
