Adler number: mu,1449

Vetting Status: low

[sc. The adjective comes] from delaying and postponement. In effect, one full of delay and sluggishness; or because when being ground up some perfumes become sweeter; but at the same time [sc. the word is used here] with a view to delay.
Greek Original:
Μύρον διατριπτικόν: παρὰ τὸ διατρίβειν καὶ ἀναβάλλεσθαι. οἷον τὸ διατριβῆς γέμον καὶ βραδυτῆτος: ἢ ἐπεὶ τριβόμενα ἔνια τῶν μύρων ἡδίω γίνεται: ἅμα δὲ καὶ πρὸς τὴν διατριβήν.
Notes:
Aristophanes, Lysistrata 942-943, with scholion.
The adjective διατριπτικόν literally means 'fit for bruising' (LSJ), but the wordplay here puns on the meanings 'waste time' as well as 'pound (sc. in preparation)'. See Henderson's note.
