Headword: Μεσήνη
Adler number: mu,659
Translated headword: Mesene, Messene?
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
A name of a city. And Mesenian, [someone] from Mesene.
Greek Original:
Μεσήνη: ὄνομα πόλεως. καὶ Μεσήνιος, ὁ ἀπὸ τῆς Μεσήνης.
Note:
The city intended was probably Messene (as indeed one manuscript has it), on the slopes of Mt. Ithome in Messenia, SW Greece. However, this Messene was usually spelled with a double sigma. There was another Mesene usually spelled with a single sigma, but this was a district (not city) of Mesopotamia around Ktesiphon/Seleukeia. See Pliny 6.129 & 131.
