Headword: Μετῄεσαν
Adler number: mu,789
Translated headword: they were pursuing, going after
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
They were coming after, they were pursuing. “And, as he had performed the noblest deed, he escaped quickly making straight for his lover. The spear-bearers[1] pursued him, and he would have escaped if he had not run into yoked sheep and, entangled as if in foot shackles, been then tripped up.”[2]
Notes:
This entry, with the third person plural of the imperfect indicative of μέτειμι from ἰέναι (‘to go, come’), glosses and exemplifies the verb correctly. See mu 782 and mu 784 for its related use in law. Particular problems are, however, caused by its appearances at mu 786 (cf. mu 699) and mu 783.
[1] See delta 1403. A term, frequent in Suda, used of the bodyguards of kings and tyrants, and, at Rome, of the praetorian guard.
[2] Aelian fr.73b D-F (70 Hercher); cf. epsilon 2624, theta 520, omicron 250, pi 860, pi 2843, sigma 757, upsilon 290.
