Xenophon has the word νάπος in the neuter, [meaning] a gulley. "[...] when the leaders came to a gulley hard-to-cross and large, they halted there, not knowing whether the gulley was to be crossed."[2]

Νάπος οὐδέτερον καὶ θηλυκὸν ἡ Νάπη: ὀρεινὸς ὑλώδης τόπος. οἱονεὶ νάφη ὡς μὴ φῶς ἔχουσα διὰ δάσος. Ξενοφῶν οὐδετέρως λέγει τὸ νάπος, τὸ ἔδαφος. ἐπεὶ οἱ ἡγούμενοι ἐγένοντο ἐπὶ νάπει δυσβάτῳ καὶ μεγάλῳ, ἔστησαν ἀγνοοῦντες, εἰ διαβατέον εἴη τὸ νάπος.
