Translation: A stranger.[1]
Being legitimate [is] a divine sort of thing in the production of offspring among human beings. For this reason he who does not have this [is called] νόθος , as being deprived of something divine [θεῖον ]; with the privative νο . From this [come] νόθα ["spurious things"] and by transference things that are simply foreign.[2]
Greek Original:Νόθος: ὁ ξένος. θεῖόν τι τὸ γνήσιον ἐν τοῖς κατ' ἀνθρώπων τόκοις. διόπερ ὁ μὴ τοῦτ' ἔχων νόθος, οἷα ἐστερημένος τοῦ θείου: παρὰ τὴν νο στερητικήν. ἐντεῦθεν δὲ νόθα καὶ τὰ ἁπλῶς ξένα μεταφορικῶς.
