Headword:
Ναυηγός
Adler number: nu,54
Translated headword: shipwrecked person; ship-captain
Vetting Status: low
Translation: The commander of the ship.[1]
This [is used] in common gender;[2] but poetry writes thus [sc. when it wants to describe] also him who suffered shipwreck.[3]
Greek Original:Ναυηγός: ὁ τῆς νηὸς ἀρχηγός. τοῦτο κοινῶς: ἡ δὲ ποίησις καὶ τὸν ναυαγήσαντα οὕτω γράφει.
Notes:
Adler indicates this entry, which is lacking in manuscripts AFV, as an interpolation.
[1] The more common sense of the headword is "shipwreck victim," as from the verb ἄγνυμι ["break"]; the meaning glossed here interprets the second element of the compound as the verb ἄγω ["lead"].
[2] It has two terminations, no special feminine forms.
[3] For instances of this, in poetry and prose alike, see LSJ s.v.
