The verb ὠδίνω seems here to refer to the envy as a true labor of the mind. This sense is applied to "agonies of thought", by Plato, Theaetetus 148E; cf. also Euripides, Hippolytus 258, Heraclidae 644; Sophocles, Ajax 794. See also Plato, Republic 407C for the meaning of "worry for something" and Hesychius, Lexicon omega55 (gloss πάσχει, λυπεῖται besides τίκτει, ἐγκυμονεῖ . The verb has a brief mention at omega 22.
