Headword: κάνης τῆς τύχης ὑπερέχει
Adler number: omicron,103
Translated headword: The doormat surpasses the bed
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[A proverb] applied to those who own more and better [un]necessary things than necessary ones.
Greek Original:
Ὁ κάνης τῆς τύχης ὑπερέχει: ἐπὶ τῶν τὰ ἀναγκαῖα μείζω καὶ πλείω τῶν ἀναγκαίων κεκτημένων.
Note:
Crates fr.12 Kock, quoted several times in lexicography (e.g. Pollux 10.90). The Suda's version not only omits a crucial negative from the gloss, as indicated, but corrupts the second noun in the headword phrase itself, from κοίτης ('bed') to τύχης ('luck').
Keywords: comedy; daily life; proverbs
