Headword:
Ὄγχναι
Adler number: omicron,27
Translated headword: pears
Vetting Status: low
Translation: wild pears [achrades], or pears [apioi].[1]
Greek Original:Ὄγχναι: ἀχράδες, ἢ ἄπιοι.
Notes:
The second of these glosses comes from the
scholia to
Homer,
Odyssey 7.115, where the headword occurs.
The
ἄπιος is the common pear (
pyrus communis,
alpha 3194,
alpha 3195,
alpha 3197) of which the
ὄγχνη is a variety. Compare
Theophrastus,
History of Plants 2.5.6, where the
ὄγχνη is associated with cultivated trees. The
ἀχράς , as also the
ἄχερδος , is the wild pear (
pyrus amygdaliformis or
spinosa), usually planted as a defensive hedge in ancient Greece, but also eaten. See, for example,
Eumaeus' farm at
Odyssey 14.10 and web address 1. See also
alpha 4713.
