Headword: Ὄγχναι
Adler number: omicron,27
Translated headword: pears
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
wild pears [achrades], or pears [apioi].[1]
Greek Original:
Ὄγχναι: ἀχράδες, ἢ ἄπιοι.
Notes:
The second of these glosses comes from the scholia to Homer, Odyssey 7.115, where the headword occurs.
The ἄπιος is the common pear (pyrus communis, alpha 3194, alpha 3195, alpha 3197) of which the ὄγχνη is a variety. Compare Theophrastus, History of Plants 2.5.6, where the ὄγχνη is associated with cultivated trees. The ἀχράς , as also the ἄχερδος , is the wild pear (pyrus amygdaliformis or spinosa), usually planted as a defensive hedge in ancient Greece, but also eaten. See, for example, Eumaeus' farm at Odyssey 14.10 and web address 1. See also alpha 4713.
