Headword: Ὀδυρτική
Adler number: omicron,62
Translated headword: querulous
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[Produced] by a change of the "r" [of] ὀδύρση , that is, Thracian.[1] Or from "to lament" [ὀδύρεσθαι ]: that is to say producing a wail and a lamenting cry. Aristophanes [writes]: "some spear-head stuck into me through the bones lamentably."
Greek Original:
Ὀδυρτική: κατ' ἐναλλαγὴν τοῦ ρ Ὀδύρση, τουτέστι Θρᾳκική. ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀδύρεσθαι: τουτέστι θρῆνον ἐμποιοῦσα καὶ ὀδυρμόν. Ἀριστοφάνης: λόγχη τις ἐμπέπηγέ μοι δι' ὀστέων ὀδυρτή.
Notes:
The Lamachus character in Aristophanes, Acharnians 1226 (which has the neuter plural ὀδυρτά [sic] used as an adverb: web address 1), with scholion. The present headword, ὀδυρτική , does not occur in the passage and is presumably a slip.
