Aristophanes [writes]: "for now it seems to me that these smell of bigger and greater matters; and most of all I catch the scent of the tyranny of Hippias."[1] This man was a tyrant, who made the Athenians wear katonakai, so that they would not be able to bring their hands forward.[1] But the Lacedaemonians stoned him to death.[2] There being 4 sons of Peisistratos, Hippias was older than the others and [sc. therefore] set up a tyranny.

Ὄζειν: Ἀριστοφάνης: ἤδη γὰρ ὄζειν ταδὶ πλειόνων καὶ μεγίστων πραγμάτων μοι δοκεῖ: καὶ μάλιστ' ὀσφραίνομαι τῆς Ἱππίου τυραννίδος. οὗτος τύραννος ἦν, ὃς ἐποίησε τοὺς Ἀθηναίους κατωνάκας φορεῖν, ὅπως μὴ δυνηθῶσι προενεγκεῖν τὰς χεῖρας. τοῦτον δὲ κατέλευσαν Λακεδαιμόνιοι. δ# ὄντων τῶν Πεισιστρατιδῶν, ὁ δὲ Ἱππίας πρεσβύτερος ἦν τῶν ἄλλων καὶ τυραννίαν ὑπέθετο.
