Headword: Ὀζωτά
Adler number: omicron,76
Translated headword: sour
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
Aristophanes is speaking about Euripides: "sour and pungent;"[1] which, as the same [writer] says, "this is strong seasoning for meat when it is high."[2]
Greek Original:
Ὀζωτά: Ἀριστοφάνης περὶ Εὐριπίδου φησίν: ὀζωτὰ καὶ στιλφωτά: ἅπερ, ὡς αὐτός φησι, καταπυγοσύνη ταῦτά ἐστι πρὸς κρέας μέγα.
Notes:
From Diogenes Laertius 4.18; cf. Pollux 6.69.
[1] These two adjectives exist nowhere else in Greek literature in the forms transmitted here, which are the result of copyist's errors. The first should be not ὀζωτά but ὀξωτά , i.e. something made sour-tasting by vinegar. The second should be not στιλφωτά but σιλφιωτά , i.e. derived from silphion/silphium (sigma 422, sigma 423).
[2] Aristophanes fr. 130 Kock.
