Headword:
Ὀί̈ω
Adler number: omicron,99
Translated headword: I think
Vetting Status: low
Translation: I suppose.[1]
And ὀϊσθείς ["having thought"], having supposed.[2]
Greek Original:Ὀί̈ω: ὑπολαμβάνω. καὶ Ὀϊσθείς, ὑπολαβών.
Notes:
[1] Active present-tense form for the usual
οἴομαι , cf.
lambda 92,
omicroniota 157,
omicroniota 158,
omicron 928. The active form occurs, however, much more commonly than the middle in
Homer (131 times against 5). See H.W. Nordheider's article in
Lexikon des fruehgriechischen Epos III (fasc. 17, 1999) 626-31. Bertolin shows that it expresses a more self-assured opinion than the middle forms (see bibliography). The gloss "I suppose" would then be in error. The form is either three syllables or two.
[2] Aorist participle of
οἴομαι .
