Aristagoras of Miletus went to
Sparta to ask for help for the Ionians, whom the Persians were fighting in a war. He made a speech wearing expensive clothing and the rest of his Ionian finery; so one of the Ephors said to him '[keep] Milesian ways at home.'
Οἴκοι: ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ. καὶ παροιμία: Οἴκοι τὰ Μιλήσια. ἐπὶ τῶν ὅπου μὴ προσήκει τὴν τρυφὴν ἐπιδεικνυμένων: Ἀρισταγόρας γὰρ ὁ Μιλήσιος ἐλθών ποτε εἰς Λακεδαίμονα ἠξίου βοηθεῖν τοῖς Ἴωσι πολεμουμένοις ὑπὸ Περσῶν. ἐδημηγόρει δὲ ἐσθῆτα ἔχων πολυτελῆ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην τρυφὴν τὴν Ἰωνικήν. εἶπεν οὖν τις πρὸς αὐτὸν τῶν Ἐφόρων: οἴκοι τὰ Μιλήσια.
