Headword: Φαέθοντα τόκον
Adler number: phi,15
Translated headword: radiant offspring, son Phaethon
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
Brilliant, and striking in appearance
Greek Original:
Φαέθοντα τόκον: ἐπιφανῆ, καὶ καταπληκτικὸν τὴν πρόσοψιν.
Note:
The lemma appears to be a two-word phrase in the accusative singular, evidently quoted from somewhere. It is the same in Photius, and also in Appendix Proverbiorum 5.1l; but in Hesychius φαέθοντα is the headword, and τόκον ἐπιφανῆ καὶ καταπληκτικὸν τῇ προσόψει is the gloss. If the latter version is correct, perhaps Φαέθοντα is the proper name Phaethon. [For Phaethon as a planet, see epsilon 2824; for the adjective, see phi 16 (and kappa 1380).]
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; mythology; poetry
