Vetting Status: low
Translation:
Radiant. [sc. Someone] reporting and making clear the matters and disclosing [them]; or from the [verb] φαίνω ["to reveal"], that is to blackmail. "So that I will be your Phanos, scribe of lawsuits."[1] But they used to call φανόν anything which revealed [something]. But they used to make lamps out of grape-vines. Hence the expression "vine's light".[2]
Notes:
For the adjective φανός cf. phi 71.
[1] Aristophanes, Knights 1256 (web address 1), preceded here by material from the scholia there. Phanos is routinely (e.g. LSJ s.v. II, LGPN ii) taken to be a real individual, his name appropriate to his livelihood.
[2] From the fuller scholia on Aristophanes, Lysistrata 308, where the noun φανός ("torch") occurs (web address 2).
