That of Hades. "But you will not raise him from the lake of Hades, which is common to all, not with lamentations or prayers." Πάγκοινος [means the lake] at which all must arrive. The sense [is]: not by grieving nor by petitioning the gods will you raise this man up.[1] In the Homeric saying: "for there is no effect in bitter lamentation."[2] And Aeschylus [writes]: "death [is] the only god who does not love gifts."[3] "He does not accept the part of sweet hope."[4]

Πάγκοινος λίμνη: ἡ τοῦ ᾅδου. ἀλλ' οὔτοι τόν γ' ἐξ ἀί̈δα παγκοίνου λίμνας ἀνστάσεις, οὔτε γόοις οὔτε λιταῖσιν. παγκοίνου, εἰς ἣν ἅπαντας ἀφικέσθαι δεῖ. ὁ δὲ νοῦς: οὔτε ὀδυρομένη οὔτε παρακαλοῦσα τοὺς θεοὺς τοῦτον ἀναστήσεις. Ὁμηρικῶς: οὐ γάρ τις πρῆξις πέλεται κρυεροῖο γόοιο. καὶ Αἰσχύλος: μόνος θεῶν γε θάνατος οὐ δώρων ἐρᾷ. οὐ δέχεται γλυκερᾶς μέρος ἐλπίδος.
