Headword: Παλίμβολος
Adler number: pi,89
Translated headword: contrary
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Disreputable, changeable, servile. Clement [?defines it thus].[1] Possible too, instead of palimbolos, [is] enantiobolos ["contrary"],[2] [meaning] of opposite opinion, as also a stubborn donkey.[3]
Greek Original:
Παλίμβολος: ἀδόκιμος, εὐμετάβολος, ἀνελεύθερος. Κλήμης. δύναται καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ παλίμβολος ἐναντιόβολος, ἐναντιογνώμων, ὡς καὶ παλίνδης ὄνομα.
Notes:
For this adjective see already pi 88. (LSJ entry at web address 1.) The present entry is also in Photius, and paralleled elsewhere.
[1] This is probably C. the Platonic commentator (see eta 481, at n.4), and if so, the passage that has prompted the entry will be Plato, Laws 705A, ἤθη παλίμβολα καὶ ἄπιστα .
[2] So too in Eudemus, but enantioboulos in Photius.
[3] The Suda's παλίνδης ὄνομα is faulty; παλίνδης ὄνος is the reading in Eudemus and Photius. (The adjective does not occur elsewhere, but its general meaning seems clear.)
