Clement [?defines it thus].[1] Possible too, instead of
palimbolos, [is]
enantiobolos ["contrary"],[2] [meaning] of opposite opinion, as also a stubborn donkey.[3]
Greek Original:Παλίμβολος: ἀδόκιμος, εὐμετάβολος, ἀνελεύθερος. Κλήμης. δύναται καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ παλίμβολος ἐναντιόβολος, ἐναντιογνώμων, ὡς καὶ παλίνδης ὄνομα.
Notes:
For this adjective see already
pi 88. (LSJ entry at web address 1.) The present entry is also in
Photius, and paralleled elsewhere.
[1] This is probably C. the Platonic commentator (see
eta 481, at n.4), and if so, the passage that has prompted the entry will be
Plato,
Laws 705A,
ἤθη παλίμβολα καὶ ἄπιστα .
[2] So too in
Eudemus, but
enantioboulos in
Photius.
[3] The Suda's
παλίνδης ὄνομα is faulty;
παλίνδης ὄνος is the reading in
Eudemus and
Photius. (The adjective does not occur elsewhere, but its general meaning seems clear.)
