Translated headword: decisions, decrees, proposals passed by vote
Vetting Status: low
Translation: Opinions prevailing.[1]
"This was agreed, if the emperor of the Romans should cast his ballot for the decision."[2] Meaning [if] it should prevail.
Greek Original:Ψηφίσματα: γνῶμαι ἀρέσκουσαι. ξυνήρεσε δὲ τὰ τοιάδε, εἰ ὁ Ῥωμαίων βασιλεὺς τῷ δόγματι ἐπιψηφίσοιτο. ἀντὶ τοῦ ἀρεσθῇ.
Notes:
[1] The headword, a neuter noun, literally -- though rarely in practice -- means collective decisions reached by casting pebbles (
psi 85,
psi 86) as ballots. The present plural (evidently quoted from somewhere) is similarly glossed in
Hesychius.
[2] As Adler notes, Roos hesitantly attributed this quotation to Arrian. In fact it comes, with the addition of
τῷ δόγματι , from
Menander Protector (fr.18.3 Blockley). See now Favuzzi ([cited under
alpha 1990] 61.
