Athena the Rhodians were holding a succession of banquets in the temple, but they were not in the habit of bringing in a chamberpot. When he had granted permission,[1] they went back with another question: 'bronze or earthenware?' He was angry and replied: 'neither'. So the proverb is applied to those wishing to know something superfluous.
Greek Original:Ῥοδίων χρησμός: Ῥόδιοι τῇ Λινδίᾳ Ἀθηνᾷ θύοντες καθεκάστην ἡμέραν ἐνδιετέλουν τῷ ναῷ εὐωχούμενοι: οὐκ ἦν δὲ αὐτοῖς ἔθος ἀμίδα εἰσφέρειν. συγκαταινέσαντος δέ, πάλιν ἀνεπυνθάνοντο, χαλκῆν ἢ ὀστρακίνην; ὁ δὲ ὀργισθεὶς ἀπεφήνατο μηδετέραν. διὸ τὴν παροιμίαν τάσσεσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν περιεργότερον πυνθανομένων.
