Adler number: rho,32
Translated headword: Rhamnous, Rhamnus
Vetting Status: high
Translation: In reference to the wise and well-regarded.[1] For Rhamno(u)s [is] a deme of Attica,[2] in which Antiphon flourished in rhetoric.[3] Since many wished to emulate him, they left a proverb [relating] to his life, which results in beautiful people being called Rhamnoi.
Notes:
An entry of poor quality: beides the incorrect headword (see n. 1) there is some dubious grammar and some odd phraseology.
[1] See again under
rho 33 (end). It confirms the view of Scaliger and others -- probable enough anyway -- that the headword of the present entry, transmitted as
Rhamnos, should have been
Rhamnousios ("a Rhamnousian"). (The end of the entry, correspondingly, should be Rhamn(nousi)oi.)
[2] A fortress-deme (in the tribe Aiantis) on the NE coast; it has left extensive remains. See generally J.S. Traill,
The Political Organization of Attica (Princeton 1975) 53, and again
