Headword: Ῥάξαι
Adler number: rho,39
Translated headword: to dash, to strike
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning to overthrow.[1] Thus Apollodorus [sc. uses the word].[2]
Greek Original:
Ῥάξαι: ἀντὶ τοῦ καταβαλεῖν. οὕτως Ἀπολλόδωρος.
Notes:
[1] Aorist active infinitive of ῥάσσω /ῥάττω ; similarly glossed in other lexica. According to LSJ, the alpha is probably long by nature, since the Ionic form is ῥήσσω (also in Koine). In that case, the aorist infinitive would be expected to have a circumflex accent (ῥᾶξαι ).
[2] Apollodorus of Athens FGrH 244 F270 (contextless) -- or else one of the 2 comic poets of this name, A. of Gela (alpha 3405) and A. of Karystos (CAF III fr. 22 Kock). For the sense cf. ῥάξαντες in Demosthenes 54.8.
