Translated headword: Rhaikos, Raecus
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
A Roman.[1] But ῥέκος with epsilon means a girdle.[2]
Greek Original:
Ῥαῖκος: ὁ Ῥωμαῖος. Ῥέκος δὲ διὰ τοῦ ε ψιλοῦ σημαίνει τὴν ζώνην.
Notes:
[1] Ῥαικός is cited from Epicharmus (fr. 184 Kaibel). Philoxenus (phi 394) fr.588 Theodoridis reportedly said this was from Γραικός [Latin Graecus, "Greek" (gamma 447)] and the G had been dropped. Hesychius, on the other hand, says that Ῥαικός means Hellene, and the Romans have added the G.
