The mallet.[1] [So called] from the [verb] ῥῶ , [meaning] I destroy. The one destroying things set under it.

Ῥαιστήρ: ἡ σφύρα. παρὰ τὸ ῥῶ, τὸ φθείρω. ἡ φθείρουσα τὰ ἐντιθέμενα. ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασιν: ἐκ πυρὸς ὁ ῥαιστὴρ καὶ ὁ καρκίνος ἥ τε πυράγρη ἄγκεινθ' Ἡφαίστῳ. καὶ αὖθις: οὐδ' εἴ με χρύσειον ἀπὸ ῥαιστῆρος Ὅμηρον στήσητε φλογέαις ἐν Διὸς ἀστεροπαῖς.
