Headword: Σατανᾶς
Adler number: sigma,151
Translated headword: Satan
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[Note] that "Satan" in the Hebrew language means the Apostate.[1] He is at the same time a slanderer,[2] as he makes lying accusations about God to men and thrusts the men themselves into mutual strife and war. The demons were not evil from the start, for they were made by the Lord of the universe, but by the turning away of their minds from better things to worse they fell at their own volition and by their own choice. They were not content with what God had provided but were greatly unsatisfied, to admit the passion of the delusion and to fall out of the honor they had been given since the beginning and take up the war against men and rage at them since they had been honored by [being made in] God's image, and were guarded by authority of the angels. And God did not prevent this contentious struggle, so that the match would show who were the best.[3]
Mark in what way man is fought when he is met by the devil.
Notes:
[1] The name "Satan" actually comes from a Hebrew root word שׂטן meaning "to accuse" and has nothing to do with apostasy or enmity.
[2] Diabolos, whence "devil." Cf. delta 508.
