Translation: [Note] that for Saul the king of the Jews [the] beginning of the esteem in which he was held by everyone occurred [sc. in the war] against Nahash the king of the Ammonites; for this man did many bad things to the Jews, and besides the other bad things, he cut out the right eyes of all whom he subdued by the law/custom of war, in order that they would be utterly useless with their best[1] eye being covered by the shields. Greek Original:Σαοῦλος: ὅτι Σαούλῳ τῷ Ἰουδαίων βασιλεῖ ἀρχὴ τῆς παρὰ πάντων τιμῆς πρὸς Ναασῆν τὸν Ἀμμανιτῶν βασιλέα γίνεται: οὗτος γὰρ πολλὰ κακὰ τοὺς Ἰουδαίους διατίθησι καὶ πρὸς τοῖς ἄλλοις κακοῖς, ὅσους ἐχειροῦτο πολέμου νόμῳ, τοὺς δεξιοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐξέκοπτεν, ὅπως τῆς ἀρίστης αὐτοῖς ὄψεως ὑπὸ τῶν θυρεῶν σκεπομένης, ἄχρηστοι παντελῶς εἶεν. τοῦτον οὖν ὁ Σαοῦλος κατηγωνίσατο.
