Translation: [sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to those with frightening appearances; for when Tenes laid down laws in
Tenedos[1] he stipulated that a man with an axe should stand behind the judge and strike the man being convicted after he had spoken in vain.[2]
Τενέδιος ἄνθρωπος: ἐπὶ τῶν φοβερὰς ὄψεις ἐχόντων: ὁ γὰρ Τένης ἐνομοθέτησεν ἐν Τενέδῳ ἄνθρωπον πέλεκυν ἔχοντα ἵστασθαι κατὰ νῶτον τοῦ κριτοῦ καὶ τὸν μάτην λέγοντα ἁλισκόμενον πλήττειν.
