Headword and gloss presumably make up a single quoted phrase (the second half of a line of iambic poetry, unidentifiable), rather than the latter truly glossing the former. The birds may be alive, though not necessarily so: the adjective is used of a roast pigeon in Aristophanes, Acharnians 1106.
