A kind of aromatic plant.
Xiris is used in
Theophrastus, HP 9.8.7 but more often the word appears as
χύρις : Dsc.4.22, Plin.HN21.143, Gal.12.87. It probably refers to the gladwyn or gladdon,
Iris foetidissima. Leaves smell funny when crushed; formerly used as purgative.
