Vetting Status: low
Translation:
A Locrian from Thurii,[1] Pythagorean philosopher and lawgiver, who died fighting for his homeland. This man was previously a slave and a shepherd; and having been fully educated he gave laws to his fellow-citizens. Amongst these was the one concerning women going to the marketplace: the free woman would wear white, and would have one maidservant amongst her household, but the others [would be dressed] in flowery clothes.
Notes:
'Probably the earliest lawgiver in Greece, perhaps c.650 BC' (OCD(3) s.v. Zaleucus). See also epsilon 3295.
[1] For Thurii, the settlemt established on the site of Sybaris in Sicily, see generally theta 418 (but its mention here is anachronistic; Z. was from Epizephyrian Locri, in the toe-end of Italy).
