Headword: Ζεῦξις
Adler number: zeta,38
Translated headword: Zeuxis
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A proper name.
Aristotle [sc. mentions him] as a painter in the time of Isocrates.[1]
In the temple of Aphrodite this man painted a most beautiful Eros, crowned with roses.[2]
Notes:
Of Herakleia in Italy; fifth/fourth centuries BCE. See generally OCD(3) 1638-9. "Once when Agatharchus the painter was boasting loudly of the speed and ease with which he made his figures, Zeuxis heard him, and said, 'Mine take, and last, a long time.'" (Plutarch, Pericles 13.2)
[1] A hopelessly garbled version of Harpokration s.v., which has no mention of Aristotle (but instead cites Z's mention in Isocrates 15.2 and calls him best -- aristos -- of the painters of that time).
[2] Quoted from alpha 2492.
